Opera scenography
2020

Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata, staged by the Moscow director Vladimir Bocharov, became a significant event in the cultural life of the region, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the famous love story.

Vladimir Bocharov has transposed the action of the opera into contemporary reality, striving to make the story more relatable and understandable for today’s audience. In interviews, he emphasized that such an interpretation offers a new perspective on the art of opera and helps attract viewers who may not previously have been interested in the genre. The director noted that La Traviata is a “super-relevant” story, capable of resonating with modern audiences.

The production’s scenography and costumes reflect elements of contemporary life: the stage features attributes of everyday 21st-century reality, such as smartphones and office attire. The use of multimedia technologies, including video projections, adds dynamism and visual richness to the performance, transforming it into a true artistic happening.

Choreography by Ilya Kozichev (Osha) plays an important role in the production. He integrated modern dance elements, enhancing the emotional impact of the performance. His choreographic work aims to create a physical language that reflects the characters’ inner experiences and complements Verdi’s musical dramaturgy.

La Traviata at the Buryat State Opera and Ballet Theatre is a bold experiment that unites classical heritage with contemporary theatrical forms. This production not only expands the boundaries of traditional opera art but also highlights its capacity for renewal and dialogue with current cultural contexts.
